Scheduled obsolescence: when brands commit

Electrical utensils and computer objects are not the only ones affected by planned obsolescence . Indeed, the textile industry is dominated by fast fashion , which pushes to consume more and to separate from his clothes, even if they are not used. So, to fight against this phenomenon with harmful environmental and social consequences , more and more brands are developing lines of clothing or accessories "guaranteed for life" or durable . Admittedly, longevity has a cost, but in the end, the price-quality ratio makes it possible to stand out as a winner.

These brands that guarantee their items for life (or almost)

There are more and more of them, here are some steps:

  • Patagonia. Since its creation in 1972, the American brand of sportswear encourages consumers to extend the life of their clothing by positioning against hyper consumption. It therefore offers an absolute guarantee for any repair, replacement or refund if the item is not suitable, and offers to repair any damage related to wear for a minimum price.
  • Sloggi. Lingerie specialist Sloggi launched the "Evernew" range in 2016, a line of underwear (women's and men's) designed to last 4 times longer thanks to stronger components and manufacturing processes. And if the item does not meet the expectations of the consumer, the lifetime warranty allows him to exchange.
  • Damart. The French textile brand offers the lifetime satisfaction guarantee, valid on presentation of proof of purchase and allowing an exchange or a refund without limit of time. However, this warranty does not apply in certain cases (article retouched or bulky, misuse, article purchased online). We are therefore careful at the time of purchase!
  • Dr. Martens. After the end of the "For Life" lifetime warranty range, in March 2018, the shoe brand will launch the "Hard Life" collection next August. Attention, if the products will have the same qualities and resistances, they will not be guaranteed any more for life.
  • Eastpak. The cult brand of backpacks offers an "unlimited guarantee", which covers any defect or damage for 2 years. It also offers a 30-year warranty for any defective item in terms of materials or workmanship, but some products are exempt. So we check the restrictions on the site.
  • JanSport. At the American company, this is the lifetime warranty for all bags. Thus, if the product deteriorates, it is possible to return it so that it is repaired, replaced or refunded. Attention, there are however certain conditions to respect.
  • Briggs & Riley. The American brand of luggage offers robust suitcases with a warranty repair without charge or proof of purchase (under certain conditions).

To be certain to benefit from the guarantee and to offer yourself eligible products, it is better to inquire in the store or on the brand website to avoid disappointment.

A website dedicated to guaranteed products for life

On the Buy Me Once platform , launched in 2016 by Tara Button, we only find product references with a lifespan of more than 20 years, some even with a lifetime guarantee. Internet users can find clothes, of course, but also kitchen utensils, cosmetics, toys for children, etc. An initiative to combat planned obsolescence and overconsumption. Moreover, the site even gives advice to maintain and repair its business. And if, despite all the attention, the clothes are worn out, we do not throw it away and give them a second life by recycling them .
