Different types of carotenoids

In nature, as in the food industry, we can meet several kinds of carotenoids. Lycopene is the most common carotenoid that gives red color to watermelons and tomatoes. It is used as a food additive under the number E160d. Beta-carotene is found in carrots, green vegetables, oranges and some algae. Some crustaceans, such as krill, contain astaxanthin. Finally, green vegetables, and especially spinach, are rich in zeaxanthin and lutein.


Carotenoids, natural antioxidants

The main property of carotenoids is antioxidant. These antioxidants help preserve cellular youth. The skin stays supple longer thanks to carotenoids that fight against the harmful effects of free radicals. They are also essential to maintain one's intellectual health and reduce the risk of age-related diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease. Carotenoids, especially beta-carotene, allow the assimilation of vitamin A, related to the decline of cognitive decline. Carotenoids of the lutein and zeaxanthin family, which are highly concentrated in the retina of the eye, take care of eye health and promote better long-term vision.
